As the famous poem by Dorothea Mackellar goes…. “We love our sunburnt country” and with a couple of exceptions you can find a little bit of outback in every state of Australia and whilst remote, most regions are easily accessible from major cities and towns. What is the Outback?
The “Outback” is generally used to describe the vast, remote, arid interior of Australia and is usually at least quite a few hundred kilometres away from our nation’s coastline, capital cities and urbanised areas. However, all Australian “Outback” locations are not as dry and remote as you may think.
While Outback places in Australia, such as around the townships of Roma and Injune in Queensland, maybe slightly drier than the coastal urban areas, they still support an abundance of wildlife, rivers, creeks, waterholes, important industry and rural communities. Interestingly Roma, formally recognised as being part of Australia’s Outback, is also only a one hour flight by plane or an easy 6-hour drive from Brisbane, Queensland’s bustling capital city!
“The Outback” should not be confused with the term “The bush” which by definition is used to describe rural, undeveloped land or country areas. So while you can go “Bush” in “The Outback”, not all “Bush” areas are found in “The Outback”.
So when you think about your next Australian holiday think “Outback Queensland”. Even in the arid scorched areas of Australia, you will still find beauty. Our Outback has some pure gems, that you will not find in the big smoke or anywhere else for that matter, including extraordinary flora, ecosystems and intriguing wildlife not seen anywhere else in the world.
