    From Charleville to Roma we travel in a small group (no more than 16 people) in a 4WD coaster bus, enjoying over twenty attractions and mini tours while visiting key landmarks across the Southern Queensland Outback. Within this diverse, fully catered trip, you’ll immerse yourself in the serenity of the Outback Queensland; awe at local Bilbies; uncover and be inspired by stories and history of our early pioneers, war heroes and scallywags; tantalise your taste buds with visits to a Date Farm and country pubs; relax in Artesian Spas; size up against our famous dinosaurs and megafauna; learn about the cattle and other farming industries; discover an old opal mining town and explore much more in-between.  All while meeting new people and having lots of fun along the way.

    Here’s a brief summary of the attractions and sites we visit:

    WWII Secret Tour, Charleville:  Enlist and discover how life was for 3500 United States Army Air Force personnel stationed in Charleville in WWII.  Learn why Charleville and about some WWII secrets.

    Corones Hotel, Charleville:  The story of Hotel Corones and the man behind it is a story like no other and one that has to be heard to believed! Harry ‘POPPA’ Corones was a remarkable early day entrepreneur who arrived in Australia penniless and went on to make Australian history numerous times throughout his life. This tour is filled with his story and the comical antics he used to get up to, along with tales of the rich and famous who have all stayed in the hotel.

    Date Farm, Charleville: Enjoy a delicious date loaf morning tea while learning how dates grow, and how reclaimed water came to be used for this environmentally friendly project and best of all – find out how incredibly healthy dates are for you!

    Quilpie Town: Discover the history and unique landscapes of Quilpie town and surrounds, including Baldy Top Lookout, the Opal Fossicking area, St Finbarrs’ Opal Altar, Quilpie Airport mini museum, the Powerhouse Museum and more.

    The Lake Station, Quilpie:  Quilpie Host Dan Hoch will board our coach at the station entrance for a guided tour of their 2500-acre sheep (Merino) & cattle (Droughtmaster) property followed by sunset drinks beside the picturesque Lake Houdraman.

    Toompine Hotel:  Once serviced by the Cobb & Co. Toompine is known as “The pub without a town”, located along the Dowling Track south of Quilpie.

    Yowah Township:   Discover the story of Australia’s national gem in Yowah. We’ll explore this ‘living gallery’ with its distinctive opal galleries dotted around the town, including the unique Yowah Nut.  We’ll breathe in the vast surroundings with spectacular views from all angles at the ‘The Bluff’.

    Thargomindah’s Top Four:  Engage in the history and intrigue of Leahy House, the old Thargomindah Hospital (beware of ghosts), the Hydro Power Plant /Artesian Bore and the Jail House. For any early walkers take a leisurely stroll along the Pelican Point Nature Trail

    Noccundra:  Located on the banks of the Wilson River and contained within the pastoral holding of Nockatunga Station, is the Noccundra Hotel.  Here we’ll have afternoon tea in the pub that was built in 1882 of sandstone, quarried from Mt Pool in NSW, and transported by Camel Train.

    Eromanga Natural History Museum, Eromanga:  Meet Cooper, Australia’s largest dinosaur while discovering fossils, natural and cultural heritage of the upper Murray/Darling and Lake Eyre/Cooper basins.  View the tiniest fossils the size of a sugar grain to the mightiest dinosaurs Australia has ever seen along with recent megafauna discoveries including the largest known marsupial to have ever walked the earth.

    Artist Lyn Barnes, Quilpie: Join celebrated artist Lyn Barnes at her boutique art gallery for sunset, wine and cheese. Be inspired by Lyn’s latest work and discover her unique creative connection to the Outback landscapes and people.

    Bilby Experience, Charleville. See the super cute bilbies in their spectacular nocturnal house and learn about the plight of the bilby and their successful breeding and release program.

    Royal Flying Doctor Service, Charleville . Gain an incredible insight into this iconic outback service which is still being delivered to the people of the outback by the Flying Doctor.

    Charleville Town Tour followed by an optional drive to the local Native Plant Reserve or free time.

    Big Sky Observatory, Charleville.  The beauty of a thousand stars in a dark sky is inspirational for all ages, but when combined with telescopes to peer into the depths of space itself, it has the power to transcend the soul. Your guides will show you sights like the rings of Saturn and so much more as you journey across the beautiful big sky over Charleville.

    Mitchell Great Artesian Spa:  After days of fun and adventure take the time to relax and share the secret locals have known for years by soaking in their mineralised waters at the Great Artesian Spa.  There are two pools:  One is naturally heated waters from the Great Artesian Basin which is maintained at a comfortable temperature designed to relax tired muscles and revitalise both body and mind.  The other pool is designed for those who prefer a cooler experience.  Hop in and out as you please as here we’ll also have a relaxing lunch.

    Roma Revealed.  Immerse yourself in an official Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by the Mandandanji. Discover Roma’s key landmarks such as Lake Neverfill, The Overflow, Roma Saleyards, St Paul’s Anglican Church, Roma Bush Gardens and the Biggest Bottle Tree. Enjoy lunch at one of Roma’s charming outback pubs before spending a relaxing afternoon squeezing orange juice at Rosedale Orchards.

    Big Rig Night Show / Tower, Roma. Listen to the twists and drama surrounding early oil and gas exploration along with the stories of the people that pioneered todays thriving industry.  Travel up the magnificent 40m high Big Rig Tower and enjoy the Rigger’s Tree Top walk, various exhibits, machinery displays and audio-visual presentations.

    NOTES:

    • Tours are subject to change. All tours are weather dependent and a contingency maybe required. Tours that are held during storm and fire season, actual location may vary on the day according to prevailing conditions.
    • Mobile phone coverage is limited in areas of the tour. Guides will carry first aid & remote communication equipment.
    • Mornings may be cool, but the days can warm up to mid 20’s during winter and high 30’s during summer.
    • The cost of meals are included in the tour price, however guests will need to purchase their own alcohol.
    • Tour involves short walks (with various gradients) on uneven and rocky ground. Good balance recommended.

      Travel Day.  Make your way to Charleville via the Westlander Train; fly with Rex Airlines or use your own transport.  If own transport, you can leave your vehicle at our office in Roma for pick up on Day Nine and travel with us from Roma to Charleville for the start of the tour.
